Tech2Empower Louisiana: Collective Action for Equity and Social Justice, September 25 - 27, 2019

Fellowship Host: Citizen SHE 

Citizen SHE is a nonprofit organization in Louisiana that is building an aligned base of Black women who inform, advocate for and enact a collective policy agenda to address the needs of Black women across the state. The membership-based organization is weaving a new tapestry of politically activated Black women who will become Louisiana’s advocates, operatives, decision makers, and power brokers. SHE’s work reorganizes Louisiana’s political power structures to recognize Black women as activists, leaders and elected officials who represent a crucial base of power. SHE’s strategy include leadership development, policy creation, collective advocacy, cultivating candidates, training campaigners, mobilizing Black voters and engaging elected officials.

Tech2Empower Advisors will collaborate with Citizen SHE, its community and its work for equity, social justice and Black women’s collective power in Louisiana. On this 3-day program from September 25-27, Advisors will have the opportunity to:

Participate in social justice education focused site visits including the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum and Whitney Plantation

Work with young women student leaders at Southern University, an HBCU, on storytelling, personal branding and professional development

Build a deeper understanding and appreciation for the experiences of women in a different community, establish meaningful connections and become allies.

Volunteer Advisors commit to:

  • Participating in 2 - 3  introductory & planning calls with host organizations and WAKE during the 3-4 weeks leading up to the community visit;

  • Being open to learning new perspectives and sharing skills and expertise during the 3 day community visit to New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Engaging with host organization to close out project during 2 - 3 calls in the 3 weeks following the community visit;

  • Providing a tax deductible donation of $1,250

    Does not include: lodging, flights, airport transfers, alcohol and personal incidentals. Many employers cover or match costs for professional development + volunteerism and provide paid time off. With 1:1 company gift/donation matching, cost is $625 to the Advisor (match is $625)

    The contribution includes:

Support grant to host organization

Site visits, volunteer work + meetings + Support and preparation for volunteer roles

Contribution to the costs of the local community event

Women in history, power and politics-focused historical and cultural events and sites

Local group transportation and group meals and activities
