Tech2Empower Louisiana: Collective Action for Equity and Social Justice, September 25 - 27, 2019Fellowship Host: Citizen SHE Citizen SHE is a nonprofit organization in Louisiana that is building an aligned base of Black women who inform, advocate for and enact a collective policy agenda to address the needs of Black women across the state. The membership-based organization is weaving a new tapestry of politically activated Black women who will become Louisiana’s advocates, operatives, decision makers, and power brokers. SHE’s work reorganizes Louisiana’s political power structures to recognize Black women as activists, leaders and elected officials who represent a crucial base of power. SHE’s strategy include leadership development, policy creation, collective advocacy, cultivating candidates, training campaigners, mobilizing Black voters and engaging elected officials.In September 2019, WAKE's Tech2Empower Advisors collaborated with CitizenSHE and its community by working with leaders from local nonprofits focused on social justice issues, and schools and programs serving disadvantaged or underrepresented youth. On this 3-day program from September 25-27, Advisors met with local leaders and students to learn and to provide tech and communications coaching, and for the students, career mentoring. During the three-day visit to New Orleans, Lousiana, the WAKE team and Advisors have: Engaged with and learned from social justice community organizations in New Orleans, while supporting CitizenSHE to expand its impact. - Participated in social justice education focused site visits including the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, House of Dance and Feathers and Whitney Plantation Worked with young women student leaders from College Track with career mentoring at the Exploring Career Paths Tech2Empower summit; and with students at Rooted School on storytelling, personal branding and professional development. Contributed to specialized trainings for social justice community leaders on how to effectively leverage technology to create, share and amplify stories to increase equity, social justice and collective power. Joined impact visits to social enterprises that are creating professional development, mentoring, and career opportunities to vulnerable youth, like Cafe Reconcile, The Liberty's Kitchen and Studio Be. Built of a deeper understanding and appreciation for the experiences of women in a different community, while establishing meaningful connections and alliances.
