Tech2Empower Rwanda focus areas: Advancing Girls' Education and Supporting Women Social Entrepreneurs

From May 25-June 1, 2019, WAKE brought together an international delegation of volunteer Advisors from top tech companies for Tech2Empower in Kigali, Rwanda. During our Impact Challenge at Impact Hub, Tech2Empower Advisors worked side by side with teams from local women-led social enterprises providing coaching and working on impact projects. In partnership with the Akilah Institute, we held our Tech and Career Day for Girls, a full-day STEM and leadership development program led by our Tech2Empower Advisors and team. More than 100 young women and girls from Akilah, Agahoza Shalom and FAWE participated.

What is Tech2Empower?

Through Tech2Empower, we support change-makers by getting technology expertise to women leaders in the NGO sector, social entrepreneurs and at schools focused on providing quality education and leadership training for girls and young women.  We do this by connecting them with teams of volunteer Advisors from top companies such as Google, Salesforce, Symantec and Visa. Advisors collaborate with Rwandan partners through hands-on project work, coaching and training in communications, technology and business and finance operations and strategy.

The highly interactive program exposed the girls to fun, innovative and inspiring STEM, tech and leadership topics including:

// Google's #IamRemarkable curriculum on the importance of self promotion and celebration of personal achievements.
// Mentoring circles on technology careers.
// Breakout workshops on introduction to coding, Artificial Intelligence, color science, resume writing, interview skills and setting goals for success.
// Practice sessions for storytelling, developing personal branding and crafting an elevator pitch.

Impact Challenge: Supporting Women Social Entrepreneurs

Hosted in partnership with Impact Hub Kigali, the Tech2Empower Impact Challenge is a 2-day, project-based collaborative event designed to enhance sustainability and impact of women-led social enterprises and NGOs. Each participant, chosen through a competitive application process, identified a priority  "impact project" in tech, communications or admin/finances. We matched participating organizations with teams of volunteer Advisors, and together they collaborated on an impact project and learned from each other. Program description here

The Tech2Empower community is growing

We have worked with 129 Advisors from 38 companies, collaborating with wonderful partner organizations in 10 countries. Advisors are women from top tech companies who devote their expertise, time and resources to help move the needle for women’s empowerment and girls’ education globally. Our Advisors possess a deep interest in learning from and with the partners and peers in the communities where we work. We were especially excited to learn from Rwandan partners as they are role models for the world in how to create an environment that fosters women's leadership.
